Swimming

Swimming and aqua aerobics utilize increased resistance as a means of cardio cross training. As a non-weight or load bearing form of cardio training, the benefits associated with swimming and aqua aerobics are: reduced joint stress, improved breathing technique and greater resistance compared to land based training.

Aqua aerobics can be a very effective alternative to a land based exercise program. Water naturally reduces stress on joints and ligaments, that may be experienced with more traditional land based aerobic exercise programs, and may reduce associated pain or allow faster recovery from an injury. Swimming gives the most severely stressed muscles greater recovery than cycling, but it also incorporates muscles that running neglects.
